The Mixing Bowl was created to fulfill a desire to provide the Gering Valley with home cooked yet elevated food.
Inspired by Midwest German cuisine, Chef Jamie offers a menu specializing in home cooked food just like Grandma used to make, while also offering diners more contemporary fare.
Coffee lovers also enjoy a full coffee bar, with specialties like the Monument Mocha, the White Rabbit, and the Caramel Macchiato.
Chef Jamie grew up with an affinity for the kitchen, a love that developed when she was young and helping her Grandma Ruth make traditional Midwest, German foods like grebel, egg noodles, and butterballs. Jamie pursued her passion for food by attending culinary school at Johnson & Wales University with degrees in culinary arts and restaurant management. She interned with Epicurean, a premier catering company in Denver that provided services for box seats at Denver Bronco games and many lucrative fundraisers and parties.
Although she enjoyed her experience in Denver, Chef Jamie’s real dream remained in the heart of her hometown Gering. She moved back home and began baking specialty cakes as a side business while working as a head chef for the Gering Civic Center. Meanwhile, she began laying the foundation for her ultimate dream—her very own restaurant.
Finally, in 2013, she took the plunge and opened The Mixing Bowl. Her inspiration for her first restaurant took her back to her roots—cooking German food with Grandma. Although some in her family wanted to call the restaurant Ruthie’s, Grandma is much too humble for that sort of attention. So Chef Jamie decided on “the mixing bowl,” the ultimate symbol of where her love and passion for food begins.
The Mixing Bowl’s menu features several Midwest favorites, just like Grandma used to make. Chicken noodle and butterball soup, fresh made grebel, glace, cabbage burgers, and dinna kuga are regular staples in the kitchen and bakery case. But Chef Jamie also provides diverse options for her diners, ranging from creative twists on eggs Benedict to gourmet burgers and sandwiches to filling salads with homemade dressing. Every detail is a labor love, from the homemade ketchup to the fresh-baked pastries. The Mixing Bowl provides patrons with a hometown feel and home-cooked yet elevated food.
